On Tuesday the Moscow Zoo celebrates the Day of Lion
On Tuesday the Moscow Zoo celebrates the Day of Lion. The celebrations are held within the framework of the 2nd International Festival "Children - Creators of Peace", organized due to the Moscow Zoo's 140th anniversary celebrated in 2004, the zoo's press service reported.

During the celebrations a sculpture of lion will be erected near the zoo's educational center. It will be painted by the festival's participants, children aged 2-12. Some of them are guests from the Crimea and France.

A carnival procession will be arranged in the zoo till the cage with Asian lions. The zoo's employees will tell the children about lions.

The zoo has two lions that represent the very rare species of Asian lions. There are only about 200 such lions in the world, and they live only in zoos.

The Moscow Zoo already has a sculpture of tiger installed and painted by young visitors during the celebrations of the Day of Tiger in 2003.

Meanwhile, this year's celebrations were on the brink of disruption. On the night of Monday/Tuesday a fire broke out in the 4-storey administrative building in the zoo, situated in Krasnaya Presnya in the heart of Moscow. The cause was a short circuit in the wirework. The area of fire was 10 sq m. It was extinguished by 5 am. A guard of the zoo died in the fire. The firemen found his body when searching the premises.
